DIY Car Rotor Removal Tool: Easily Remove Stuck Brake Rotors

Removing a rear brake rotor can often become a frustrating task, especially when the internal parking brake shoes decide to bind, stubbornly resisting removal. Forcing the rotor off with brute strength, like hammering, can lead to bent shoe retaining spring clips on the backing plate and even damage the shoe lining itself. Fortunately, a simple homemade Car Rotor Removal Tool can make this job significantly easier and prevent potential damage.

The key to using this car rotor removal tool effectively is to first prepare the area. Begin by liberally spraying penetrating oil around the brake shoe area. Then, gently tap the rotor back and forth with a hammer. This initial step helps to loosen any rust or debris. Next, you’ll need to create just enough space between the rotor and the backing plate to insert the car rotor removal tool. A large screwdriver can be helpful for carefully prying the backing plate away from the rotor to gain this access.

Once you have a gap, insert the car rotor removal tool into the opening. Twist the tool 90 degrees to latch it onto the inside wall of the brake shoe.

With the tool securely in place, use a large screwdriver to pry the car rotor removal tool away from the rotor. This action will gently push the brake shoe inwards, towards the backing plate, gradually releasing its grip on the rotor. Initially, the shoe might resist, but as you apply steady pressure, and the penetrating oil works its way in, movement will become easier.

Work your way around the rotor with the car rotor removal tool, applying pressure at different points, avoiding the adjuster area located at the rear of the car. Trying to release the shoe entirely from a single point can cause it to bind further and halt progress. By working incrementally around the rotor, you ensure even release and prevent binding.

This ingenious car rotor removal tool shown here was crafted from an old, broken screwdriver. By grinding, heating, and bending the screwdriver, a specialized tool was created. While this version could be slightly shorter for easier handling, it demonstrates the simplicity and effectiveness of the design.

The image above also displays a second homemade tool – designed to pull out the shoe retaining spring ends, aiding in reattaching them during reassembly. This tool, also fashioned from a modified screwdriver, could benefit from being slightly longer for improved leverage.

With the brake shoe effectively retracted using the car rotor removal tool, the rotor can now be smoothly removed without force or damage.

By utilizing this simple yet effective DIY car rotor removal tool, you can confidently tackle stuck rear brake rotors, saving time, effort, and preventing potential damage to your vehicle’s braking system.
