Like many enthusiasts, I’ve accumulated a vast array of tools for slot car maintenance and tuning. While many are common workshop items, some are specifically designed or adapted for slot car racing. Responding to the need for fundamental tools, especially after a fellow racer’s acquisition of an NSR car lacking the correct hex key, here are what I consider the four most essential Slot Car Tools for anyone starting out or looking to build a basic toolkit.
Pinion Puller/Press
A pinion puller/press is indispensable for slot car maintenance. These tools, available across various price points, are crucial for removing and installing pinions on motor shafts. My own Ninco pinion puller has proven incredibly durable over years of use, crafted from exceptionally hard steel. While my Ninco model remains a reliable tool, unfortunately, Ninco brand pullers are now less readily available. However, the market offers numerous alternatives to suit different budgets and needs.
Torx T6 Driver
For those working with Thunderslot cars, a Torx T6 driver is a must-have. Thunderslot utilizes Torx T6 screws for body and motor-pod assemblies. Therefore, contrary to some advice against Torx drivers, owning a Torx T6 is essential if you’re involved with Thunderslot models.
0.050″ Hex Driver
A 0.050″ hex driver is specifically required for most NSR grub screws. These tiny screws are commonly used in NSR cars to secure components. It’s worth noting that some NSR models, like the Formula 86/89 cars, utilize even smaller 0.9mm screws for front axle control, but for the majority of NSR grub screws, the 0.050″ driver is the standard.
0.9mm Hex Driver
Slot.it grub screws typically require a 0.9mm hex driver. Just like the 0.050″ driver is essential for NSR, the 0.9mm driver is crucial for working with Slot.it cars and components that use their specific grub screws. Having both 0.050″ and 0.9mm hex drivers covers the majority of grub screw sizes you’ll encounter in slot car maintenance.
When it comes to purchasing slot car tools, remember that the cheapest option isn’t always the wisest long-term investment. Wera tools strike a good balance between cost and quality, offering reliable performance at a reasonable price. However, for the ultimate in hex driver quality and longevity, MIP (Machined Integrity Products) tools are widely considered the best. Although MIP tools represent a higher initial investment, their durability and performance are unmatched.
Years ago, Phil Smith of scaleslotcars recommended MIP hex drivers, and after extensive personal use of various sizes, I wholeheartedly second his endorsement. MIP hex drivers are the finest I’ve ever used and have consistently performed flawlessly. Their tip design is particularly advantageous, often successfully removing grub screws that are partially rounded, where other tools would fail or become damaged themselves. These are high-caliber tools that justify their price through their exceptional quality and lifespan.
Finding MIP tools in the UK has become increasingly challenging, and prices have risen accordingly. Therefore, purchasing directly from the USA might be a worthwhile option.
