2012 Mitsubishi Fuso Canter: Model Lineup and Key Improvements
Mitsubishi Fuso Truck of America (MFTA) introduced five new Canter models for the 2012 model year, spanning Class 3 to 5, catering to diverse vocational needs. The lineup included the FE125 (Class 3), FE160 (Class 4), FE160CC (Class 4 Crew Cab), FG4X4 (Class 4 4WD), and FE180 (Class 5).
This redesign prioritized lower cost of ownership through a 10-20% increase in fuel efficiency, extended service intervals to 18,000 miles, and a payload capacity advantage of up to 2,200 lbs. compared to competitors. MFTA also emphasized lower parts pricing.
Canter FE Series: Designed for Upfitting Ease
The Canter FE series featured a standard 33.5-inch straight ladder frame with strategically placed patterned holes for simplified body mounting and weight reduction without compromising strength. High-strength 56,565-psi-yield-strength steel ensured durability.
Spacious cabs accommodated the driver and two passengers comfortably. FE models with a 110.2-inch wheelbase offered a tight turning radius of 34.1 feet. Safety features included dual-caliper hydraulic disc brakes with vacuum servo assist, four-wheel ABS, and an electronic brake priority override system. All FE models came equipped with a 30-gallon fuel tank.
Canter FG4X4: The Industry’s Only 4WD Cabover
The 2012 Mitsubishi Fuso FG4X4 maintained its unique position as the industry’s sole four-wheel-drive cabover. Its exceptional ground clearance, locking hubs, and front constant velocity joints ensured superior off-road capability. Heavy-duty axles, all-terrain tires, and a robust transfer case further enhanced its performance.
With a 14,050-lb. GVWR, the FG4X4 excelled in off-road applications, light construction, and snow plowing. The DUONIC automated transmission delivered continuous power to all four wheels for maximum traction in challenging conditions. Hydraulic drum service brakes with ABS and an electronic brake priority override system provided reliable stopping power. The FG4X4 featured a 33-gallon fuel tank.

Daimler’s BlueTec emissions control system with SCR technology ensured EPA 2010 compliance.
Standard features included easy-to-read instrumentation, power windows and door locks, a driver’s side one-touch up/down window, and foldable center and right-hand seats for added work space. Five cab colors and blue seat cloth were standard. Safety features included door crush control beams, offset door hinges for wider access, and a collapsible tilt and telescoping steering column.
