After years of hard work and saving, I finally achieved a dream: owning a 2007 Mercedes E420 Cdi. Not just any E420 CDI, but one with the full AMG package, Airmatic suspension, Bi-xenon headlights, and a laundry list of luxury features like heated/cooled, memory, and massage seats. The Harman Kardon Logic 7 sound system and NTG1 infotainment system with TV and CD changer completed the luxurious experience. This car already boasted radar cruise control and three-zone climate control, making it a truly exceptional machine.
From Luxury to Performance: Modifications for the Mercedes E420 CDI
Of course, no dream car is complete without a few personal touches. My E420 CDI wasn’t destined to remain stock. The first step was enhancing performance. I gutted the DPF, installed an AMG exhaust system, and implemented an ECU remap. The result? A staggering 400 horsepower and 870 Nm of torque. The 250 km/h speed limiter was also removed, unleashing the car’s true potential.
To complement the increased power, I blacked out all the windows and upgraded the standard xenon headlight and fog light bulbs to 6000k for a more aggressive aesthetic. The transformation from a stately luxury sedan to a menacing powerhouse was well underway.
Future Enhancements: Modernizing the Classic
While the car is mechanically impressive, certain aspects show their age. My next project focuses on updating the NTG1 head unit. I plan to replace it with a Dynavin N7 MBE unit. Having experienced the quality of a Dynavin system in my C-Class, I’m confident it’s the perfect upgrade. The Dynavin unit seamlessly integrates with the Mercedes aesthetic, retaining the signature orange lighting while adding modern features like digital radio, TV, USB ports, and an SD card slot. With a 32GB card, my entire music library will be readily available.
One of the most appealing features of the Dynavin system is its voice command functionality. While perhaps not as precise as Mercedes’ Linguatronic, its occasional quirks and “disobedience” add a touch of personality to the driving experience.
The Allure of the W211 E-Class, Especially the AMG-Styled Diesel
The W211 E-Class has always held a special appeal for me. While the standard models are undeniably handsome, the AMG package elevates the design to another level. It strikes the perfect balance between style, elegance, luxury, and aggression. The front bumper exudes a captivating “angry” look, further enhanced by the quad exhaust pipes in the rear.
AMG-styled E-Class diesels are a rare sight. Most diesel owners prioritize economy, comfort, and reliability over sporty aesthetics. Even the E320 and E420 rarely receive the AMG treatment. This rarity, particularly in Bulgaria where E200 and E220 models dominate the roads, makes my E420 CDI truly stand out.
