The Mercedes Benz Sprinter saw a sales increase of 2.5% in 2010, reaching 8,559 units sold in the US. This marked the first year of operation for Daimler Vans USA (DVU), the new sales and service network for the Sprinter. Ernst Lieb, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA, attributed the success to a focus on customer needs and the strong performance of the DVU network, which includes Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner Sprinter dealers.
The Mercedes Benz Sprinter’s Journey to 2010
The Mercedes Benz Sprinter first appeared in Europe in 1995 and a new generation launched globally in 2006. Prior to 2010, the Sprinter was sold in the US through Freightliner, a leading manufacturer of medium and heavy-duty trucks in North America. The Sprinter offered various models, including the Cargo Van, Passenger Van, MiniBus, Cab Chassis, and the newly introduced Crew Van, equipped with Mercedes-Benz safety and convenience features.
Daimler Vans USA and the 2010 Shift
In 2010, Mercedes-Benz USA began offering the Sprinter through select Mercedes-Benz dealerships, establishing DVU. This strategic move leveraged the strengths of both MBUSA and Freightliner, both divisions of Daimler AG, the world’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer. This allowed the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter to target small businesses in the US market, while Freightliner continued to serve its existing commercial vehicle customers.
Production of the 2010 Sprinter
The various Sprinter models, including the Cargo Vans, Crew Vans, MiniBus, and Passenger Vans, were produced in Düsseldorf, Germany. The Sprinter Cab Chassis vehicles were manufactured in Ludwigsfelde, Germany. This ensured consistent quality and adherence to Mercedes-Benz’s renowned engineering standards.
A Successful Year for the Mercedes Benz Sprinter
The 2.5% sales increase in 2010 solidified the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter’s position in the US market. The establishment of DVU and the collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner dealerships created a robust sales and service network, contributing significantly to the Sprinter’s success. The positive momentum from 2010 set the stage for continued growth in the years to come.
