The development of Manitou’s new XC fork prioritized a stiff chassis for precise handling on challenging courses while minimizing weight. Every component was meticulously scrutinized to shed unnecessary grams without compromising rigidity or reliability.
The HYPERLITE Chassis: Foundation for Lightweight Design
The 34mm HYPERLITE chassis, featuring a direct mount fender design, significantly contributes to the fork’s minimal weight. Deep hollow boring of the crown removes internal material, while external machining further reduces weight without sacrificing stiffness. The rear-facing arch, with its shorter leg-to-leg pathway, requires less material, enhancing both stiffness and weight savings.
Material Optimization and Innovative Components
Manitou engineers utilized stress analysis software and extensive lab testing to eliminate excess material from the arch, dropouts, and other areas. The use of 7000 series straight thin wall legs further reduces weight. Manitou’s lightest axle, the Hexlock SL-R, specifically designed for R8 and weighing only 25 grams, exemplifies the commitment to weight reduction.
Internal Enhancements for Performance and Weight Savings
Internal components were also optimized for weight. The integration of the lightweight XC tune Dorado Air spring, a lighter version of the IVA volume adjustment, and application-specific shaft lengths and materials ensure smooth performance without adding unnecessary weight. The new XC-specific VTT Pro-X sealed damper further contributes to overall weight reduction.
The Result: A Remarkably Light and High-Performing Fork
Through meticulous design and engineering, Manitou created a rigid, responsive, and reliable XC fork weighing an impressively low 1480 grams. This achievement underscores Manitou’s dedication to providing high-performance components for demanding riders.
