Asmae Lichir, a single mother, biology major, and Ada Comstock Scholar at Smith College, embodies resilience and determination. Her journey, marked by hardship and triumph, underscores the transformative power of education and self-belief. From a childhood dream nurtured with a cardboard microscope to groundbreaking research at a prestigious institution, Lichir’s story is one of unwavering pursuit of her goals.

From Cardboard Microscope to Smith College Laboratory

Lichir’s passion for science ignited in her youth, fueled by a simple cardboard microscope. Despite early discouragement, her fascination with the microscopic world persisted. She faced societal expectations that prioritized marriage over education, but with the support of her family, she persevered. Immigrating to the United States brought financial hardship, forcing Lichir to work long hours while attending school. This challenging period solidified her self-perception as a strong and capable individual.

Overcoming Adversity and Finding Strength

Life threw numerous obstacles Lichir’s way: college bankruptcy, marriage, divorce, and teen motherhood. Yet, she emerged from these trials stronger than ever. Her role as an advisory leader for Healthy Families, a support program that had once helped her, became a turning point. It reignited her ambition and reminded her of her potential. This realization propelled her to enroll in Bunker Hill Community College, marking the beginning of her academic resurgence.

The Ada Comstock Program: A Gateway to Smith

A professor at Bunker Hill recognized Lichir’s talent and encouraged her to apply to Smith College’s Ada Comstock Scholars Program, designed for students with nontraditional academic paths. Two years later, armed with an associate degree, Lichir found herself at Smith, a testament to her hard work and the unwavering belief of her mentor. Now, surrounded by a community of driven women, she carries a notebook inscribed with the mantra “be your most powerful self” as a daily reminder of her purpose.

Pathopocket Lab: A Future in Innovation

Currently, Lichir is collaborating with her professor on a groundbreaking invention, laying the foundation for her own company, Pathopocket Lab. Securing a patent for this invention would fulfill another of her aspirations: becoming a CEO. This ambition reflects her entrepreneurial spirit and desire to make a tangible impact in her field.

Embracing the Power of Smith College

Lichir acknowledges the empowering environment at Smith, recognizing the strength she derives from being a first-generation college student, a young single mother, and a member of the Smith community. While her first semester is still underway, she feels a deep sense of belonging and expresses gratitude for the opportunities Smith provides. Her journey is a powerful example of perseverance, resilience, and the transformative potential of education. Asmae Lichir’s story inspires us all to embrace our potential and pursue our dreams, regardless of the challenges we face.
