Delpfi’s Bid for European Capital of Culture 2021

The Municipality of Delpfi officially presented its candidacy for the title of “European Capital of Culture for the year 2021” on Friday, October 30, 2015, at the “Konstantinos Karamanlis” hall of the European Cultural Centre in Delpfi. This momentous occasion saw strong support from regional authorities and highlighted Delpfi’s historical and cultural significance.

Delpfi: A Unified Regional Effort for Cultural Recognition

The President of the Regional Union of Municipalities of Central Greece, Mr. Loukas Yperifanos, represented the region and conveyed the collective desire of elected officials to actively support Delpfi’s bid. Mayors from various municipalities across Central Greece, including Dorida, Lamia, Thebes, Eretria, Aliartos, and Stylida, attended the event, demonstrating a unified front in advocating for Delpfi. Representatives from the Municipality of Levadia, the Municipality of Orchomenos, and the Region were also present.

Mr. Yperifanos emphasized the importance of Delpfi’s endeavor and its undeniable regional dimension. He stated that the Regional Union of Municipalities unanimously decided to promote solidarity and mutual support among the municipalities. He further declared that Central Greece stands united in this effort and will strive to make Delpfi the European Capital of Culture for 2021. He stressed the importance of setting goals and striving to achieve them, especially during challenging times. Mr. Yperifanos assured the Mayor of Delphi and all involved in the effort that they are not alone, and the Regional Union of Municipalities will support them every step of the way.

Delpfi: A Unique Voice for Greece and Europe

The Mayor of Delpfi and member of the Board of Directors of the Regional Union of Municipalities of Central Greece, Mr. Thanasis Panagiotopoulos, concluded the evening with a powerful message. He asserted that if Greece wants to send a broader spiritual and reflective message to Europe, Delpfi is uniquely positioned to deliver it.

A highlight of the evening was the presence of Mr. Spyros Merkouris, brother of the late Melina Mercouri, a prominent Greek actress and politician who championed cultural initiatives. Mr. Merkouris delivered a keynote speech in support of Delpfi’s candidacy. The Lyceum Club of Greek Women – Thebes Branch accompanied the event with choreographed performances set to ancient Greek music. Talented performers, musicians, and the children’s choir of the Amfissa Conservatory added to the celebratory atmosphere, culminating in a memorable evening for Delpfi.
