Delete Immobilizer: A Factory Solution for Older Bosch Units

Disabling the immobilizer function on older Bosch units doesn’t require complex modifications. Bosch actually built in a factory setting to override the immobilizer. Accessing this setting and recalculating the checksums allows for complete immobilizer removal in the software. This eliminates the need for any immobilizer hardware because the firmware is programmed to detect the override. It’s important to note that the car alarm, linked to central locking, is separate from the immobilizer and housed in its own unit. Once the immobilizer is deactivated in the software, the physical unit can be removed from the car as it no longer communicates with the ignition computers.

A Potential Device for Immobilizer Control and ECU Backup

A potential device is being considered that could provide car owners with control over the immobilizer function. This device would be locked to a specific vehicle and registered to the owner’s address for security purposes. Envisioned at a price point of $200 or less, it would allow owners to enable or disable the immobilizer as needed.

Furthermore, this device could clone existing ECU data and firmware into backup Bosch ignition ECUs. Sourcing used, compatible ECUs from older vehicles like Alfa Romeos could keep costs under $100. This means for around $400, owners could have two pre-paired backup ECUs, eliminating the need for tools like an SD2 for direct swap-overs.

Expanding Functionality for Enhanced Diagnostics and Performance

Future iterations of this device could incorporate a touchscreen interface and internet connectivity for software upgrades. This opens possibilities for features like resetting trouble codes, including those requiring an SD2, performing brake fluid purges, adjusting TCU settings for F1-equipped cars, and even remapping to performance maps like the Challenge Stradale for a modest power boost.

This device could offer significant functionality for vehicles like the Ferrari 360. The development goal is to provide a valuable tool for the car community rather than maximizing profit. Further development hinges on community interest and feedback.
