Unlock Your Federal Career Potential with Strategic Career Planning Tools

Navigating career advancement as a federal employee can often feel like a complex maze. The rapid pace of technological advancement constantly reshapes roles and responsibilities, with automation impacting traditional functions and creating demand for new skills. In this evolving “knowledge economy,” continuous professional development is crucial for federal employees seeking to thrive. Recognizing this challenge, the CFO Council has introduced a government-wide Career Planning and Training Tool (CPTT) designed to empower the Federal Financial Management workforce. This innovative platform streamlines career planning and seamlessly connects employees with essential training resources, enabling them to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to excel in today’s dynamic environment.

Introducing the Federal Career Planning and Training Tool (CPTT)

The CPTT represents a forward-thinking approach to federal career development, utilizing a unique collaboration between public and private sectors. This centralized platform aims to make career planning, training, and professional growth more accessible and efficient for federal employees. Currently functioning as a proof of concept, the CPTT’s initial design is intentionally user-friendly and focused on core functionalities. However, the future expansion and enhancement of the CPTT are directly linked to federal employee engagement and feedback. Increased utilization and demonstrated demand will likely unlock further investment, leading to enriched features, broader functionality, and wider availability across the federal workforce.

Your active participation in this pilot program is vital. By embracing the CPTT, you become a key contributor to shaping the future of federal career planning and development. If you recognize the value of such a resource and advocate for its continued growth, you can demonstrate your support by:

  1. Utilizing the CPTT to explore and enroll in courses offered by partner vendors.
  2. Sharing information about the CPTT with colleagues and management within your agency.
  3. Providing valuable feedback on your user experience and suggesting areas for improvement.

Core Features and Benefits of the CPTT for Career Advancement

The primary objective of this initial CPTT version is to provide federal employees with an intuitive tool for basic career planning and effortless access to relevant, timely, and cost-effective training opportunities. As a pilot, the tool initially focuses on the four most prevalent job series within the financial management community.

To begin using the CPTT, simply utilize the “Job Series” and “GS Level” filters. This action will populate the central screen and below with virtual “cards” containing targeted career guidance. Each virtual card is designed to highlight a specific, relevant “competency,” offering a general description, associated behaviors, and proficiency levels pertinent to that competency. The information presented on these cards is the result of CFO Council consensus, reflecting the essential knowledge and skills for each GS-Level stage within each featured job series.

Crucially, these competency cards also incorporate embedded links to courses offered by vetted vendor partners. These links serve as direct pathways to training resources designed to help you master specific aspects of each competency. Our partner vendors offer a diverse range of course types and learning modalities to suit various preferences, including online, on-site, hybrid, micro-learning, and cohort-style options. These courses are readily available for purchase using government purchase cards (with most courses falling well below the $10,000 purchase card limit). By simply clicking on the vendor links, you can seamlessly explore their comprehensive and relevant training catalogs.

In total, the CPTT encompasses up to 54 competency variations applicable to each job series, ensuring comprehensive coverage. The virtual card information dynamically adjusts within the CPTT based on your selected filters. The chosen GS-Level directly influences the proficiency and behavioral career planning and training guidance displayed on the cards. For instance, users selecting GS Levels 7-9 will encounter foundational information tailored to early-career stages, while those selecting higher GS Levels, such as 14-15, will access more advanced and specialized guidance appropriate for senior personnel.

Maximizing the CPTT for Your Federal Career Path

Federal employees can leverage this career planning tool in numerous ways to enhance their professional journeys. After applying filters for their current job series and GS-level, employees can utilize the information presented on the competency cards as a structured checklist to assess their existing knowledge base and identify potential development needs. The CPTT also empowers employees to proactively research the recommended knowledge and skills required for proficiency in different job series or GS levels, facilitating informed decisions regarding lateral career moves or upward advancement. Furthermore, supervisors can effectively utilize the CPTT to pinpoint critical experience and training requirements for the professional development of their team members.

Once a user identifies a specific knowledge gap, the embedded web links provide immediate access to explore available external training options. When selecting a course, employees should always adhere to their respective agency’s policies and procedures for training purchases.
