C2205: ESP Light Triggered During Left Turns – A Potential Fix

The C2205 fault code often indicates an issue with the steering angle sensor (SAS) in Mercedes-Benz vehicles. One common scenario is the ESP (Electronic Stability Program) light illuminating during moderate left turns. This can be due to a misaligned steering column control module (SCCM). A STAR case (Mercedes-Benz technical service bulletin) outlines a procedure involving steering shaft protrusion measurement, but a simpler solution might exist. This article outlines a potential fix for this problem, focusing on adjusting the SCCM position.

This fix, derived from a successful repair on a 2008 model experiencing the same issue, bypasses the steering shaft measurement and addresses the SCCM directly. The official procedure incorrectly specifies a T25 Torx screwdriver; the correct tool is a T30 Torx screwdriver, preferably a non-replaceable bit type for optimal torque.

Here’s the step-by-step repair procedure:

  1. Locate the Access Hole: Identify the small hole on the underside of the SCCM. This hole provides access to the clamp screw securing the SCCM to the steering column.

  2. Loosen the Clamp Screw: Insert a T30 Torx screwdriver into the access hole and loosen the clamp screw approximately four turns. Crucially, do not remove the screw completely. It’s designed to remain captive within the SCCM assembly.

  3. Adjust the SCCM Position: Gently pull the SCCM upwards along the steering column tube, towards the steering wheel. The movement will be limited due to the captured screw and an oval-shaped hole in the column tube’s casting. Focus on applying upward pressure evenly, although slight adjustments to the left side might be necessary.

  4. Secure the SCCM: Once the SCCM is pulled out as far as possible, while maintaining upward tension, re-tighten the clamp screw using the T30 Torx screwdriver. Ensure it’s firmly secured.

  5. Verify the Fix: After completing the procedure, conduct a thorough test drive, paying particular attention to left turns. Observe if the ESP light still illuminates.

This procedure addresses a potential misalignment of the SCCM, which can trigger the C2205 fault code and illuminate the ESP light. By slightly adjusting the SCCM’s position, the sensor’s readings might be corrected, resolving the issue. If the problem persists after attempting this fix, further diagnosis, potentially involving the steering shaft protrusion measurement outlined in the STAR case, is recommended.
