Autolauch Issues with Android Auto in a 2017 Honda Civic EX-T

Android Auto’s Autolauch feature has been malfunctioning in my 2017 Honda Civic EX-T recently, causing problems with text message replies. While incoming messages are displayed and read aloud, attempts to reply verbally result in generic responses like “Noted” or “You’ve got it,” preventing actual message composition. The system then reverts to navigation mode.

Currently, the only workaround is to manually initiate a new text message using voice commands via the microphone button. This is less than ideal while driving, as it requires more interaction with the touchscreen.

My typical usage involves Google Maps for navigation and Spotify for music streaming. While unconfirmed, I suspect Spotify might be a contributing factor, as it occasionally seems to interfere with Google Maps when adding in-route stops.

About three weeks ago, a fleeting popup related to text messages appeared on the car’s touchscreen. Its brief appearance prevented interaction, but it might hold a clue to the issue.

My Android Auto settings are as follows:

  • Autolauch: On
  • Pocket Detection: On
  • Autolaunch Devices: Honda Civic
  • Limit Wi-Fi: Off
  • Connected Cars: Accepted Honda, Rejected None
  • Show Message Notifications: On
  • Bluetooth also paired to Civic: Yes
  • Use Bluetooth: Off
  • Screen On: Always On

Phone’s Android Auto app notification settings are:

  • App Notifications: On
  • App Icon Badges: On
  • Uncategorized: No Sound (On), Importance: Medium, App Icon Badges: On, On Lock Screen: Show Content, DND Custom Exception: Off

Additionally, text messages appear on the dash below the speedometer, but only allow replies with pre-set canned responses. Disabling this feature would be preferable.

Has anyone experienced similar issues with Android Auto’s autolauch and text message replies? Could a recent software update or a specific setting be the culprit? Any insights or solutions would be greatly appreciated.
