AlfaOBD: In-Depth Diagnostic Software for Stellantis Vehicles

AlfaOBD is a comprehensive diagnostic software designed for vehicles manufactured by the Stellantis group (formerly Fiat Chrysler Automobiles). This software supports a wide range of vehicles, including Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia models from 1994 to 2023, and Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, and Jeep vehicles from 2005 to 2023. For specific model compatibility, refer to the supported vehicles list on the official AlfaOBD website.

AlfaOBD: Beyond Generic OBD2 Scanners

While primarily aimed at car owners, AlfaOBD offers functionality comparable to professional-grade diagnostic scanners. Unlike generic OBDII/EOBD applications that provide limited access to engine and transmission modules, AlfaOBD directly supports Electronic Control Units (ECUs). This allows for deeper diagnostics and configuration options across various vehicle systems, including ABS, climate control, and more.

AlfaOBD is available for both Windows (XP, 8, 8.1, 10, 11) and Android (4.0.3 and above) platforms. Functionality remains consistent across both versions, offering users flexibility in choosing their preferred platform.

Important Note: The “Alfa OBD2” app on the Apple App Store is not affiliated with AlfaOBD and is a different product. While using AlfaOBD on Mac is possible via Parallels or Bootcamp with a Windows installation, certain limitations apply to M1 Macs concerning WiFi OBD interface compatibility.

Comprehensive Feature Set of AlfaOBD

AlfaOBD boasts a powerful array of features:

  • Real-Time Monitoring: Observe dynamic parameters from engine, transmission, body, ABS, and more, presented in adjustable graphical plots.
  • Data Retrieval: Read static data such as ECU identification, system status, fault codes (DTCs) with probable causes, and freeze frame data.
  • Fault Code Management: Clear DTCs and monitor the system for new faults.
  • Active Diagnostics: Perform active diagnostic and configuration procedures, including service light resets, oil changes, DPF regeneration, ABS bleeds, and more.
  • Key Programming: Program electronic keys and RF remote controls on select models.
  • Configuration Adjustments: Adjust vehicle configurations, activate newly installed equipment, and perform Proxy alignment.

Hardware Requirements for AlfaOBD

Using AlfaOBD requires three key components:

1. Security Gateway Bypass (2018+ Models)

Stellantis vehicles from model year 2018 onwards often include a Security Gateway Module (SGW) that blocks third-party diagnostics. A hardware SGW bypass module is necessary to utilize AlfaOBD on these vehicles. Ensure compatibility with the second high-speed CAN bus (pins 12 and 13 of the OBD socket) for models like Alfa Romeo Giulia/Stelvio, Fiat 500X/Argo/Chronos/Toro, Jeep Renegade/Compass MP, Ducato Serie 8, and RAM ProMaster (2022+). Consult reputable vendors like ZAutomotive, KAOD Tech, and ECRI for compatible bypass modules.

2. OBD Interface

A compatible OBD interface is crucial for connecting to the vehicle. Refer to the AlfaOBD supported vehicles list for recommended interfaces for your specific model. Supported interface types include ELM327 Bluetooth/USB, OBDKey 1.49 KLLine/CAN, and various WLAN interfaces. Note that KLLine USB interfaces are not supported on Android due to OS limitations.

3. Colored Adapters

Depending on the car model and OBD interface, additional colored adapters (“grey” or “yellow”) might be required. Consult the AlfaOBD supported vehicle list to determine the necessary adapter for your specific vehicle. The AlfaOBD app itself will indicate the required adapter type before connecting to a control module.
