A 6-pin CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) is a common component in many small engines, such as those found in ATVs, scooters, and go-karts. Understanding the wiring diagram is crucial for proper installation and troubleshooting. While color codes can be helpful, they are not always reliable, especially with aftermarket harnesses. This guide provides a simple method for identifying each wire using a multimeter.
Identifying the Wires with a Multimeter
This method relies on a multimeter for accurate identification. If you do not have a multimeter, do not attempt to install a CDI.
Step 1: Ground Wire
First, locate the ground wire. Connect one probe of your multimeter to the negative terminal of the battery. With the other probe, touch each of the six CDI wires individually. The wire that shows continuity (the multimeter beeps or shows a reading near zero) is your ground wire. Mark this wire clearly.
Step 2: Positive Wire
Next, identify the positive wire. Connect one probe of your multimeter to the positive terminal of the battery. Turn the ignition ON. Test the remaining five wires individually. The wire showing continuity is your positive wire. Mark it accordingly.
Step 3: Ignition Coil Wire
Locate your ignition coil and look for a terminal marked with a green dot. If there’s a green dot, test continuity between this terminal and each of the remaining four wires. The wire with continuity connects to the ignition coil. If there’s no green dot on the coil, test each of the four remaining wires against both coil terminals until you find the one with continuity.
Step 4: Alternator Wire
After identifying the ground, positive, and ignition coil wires, the last unidentified wire connects to the alternator.
Why Use a Multimeter?
Color codes in aftermarket wiring harnesses can be unreliable. They may change without notice, making it risky to rely on them solely. Using a multimeter ensures accurate identification, preventing potential damage to your CDI and other electrical components.
