2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Key Fob Programming: A DIY Guide

Programming a new key fob for your 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee can be surprisingly expensive at a dealership. This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough for programming a new key fob yourself using the AlfaOBD mobile app and a compatible OBD2 adapter, saving you significant money.

Choosing the Right Key Fob

The most crucial step is selecting the correct replacement key fob. The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee key fob is not interchangeable with other FCA models. Many online sellers mistakenly list incompatible fobs for the Grand Cherokee.

To determine the correct fob, check your ignition:

  • Keyless/Push-To-Start Ignition: Order part number GQ4-54T (433Mhz frequency).
  • Key-In-Ignition Slot: Order part number GQ4-53T (433Mhz frequency).

Crucially, the fob must use a HITAG AES, CHIP 4A / PCF7961M chip. Verify this detail in the product description. Ensure the replacement fob has the same number of buttons as your original, including remote start and power liftgate buttons if applicable.

Avoid fobs that lack specific chip information or are listed as compatible with the Ram 1500 or Grand Cherokee (WK2). These will not work.

Testing the New Key Fob

Before programming, test the new fob (with existing fobs away from the vehicle):

  1. Door Chime Test: With the driver’s door open, insert the new fob into the ignition (key-in-ignition models) or have it inside the vehicle (keyless models). Does the door chime sound?
  2. EVIC Test: Turn the ignition to the accessory (ACC) position. Does the Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) display “Key In Ignition”?

If both tests are successful, the Cherokee recognizes the fob, and you can proceed with programming. If not, the fob is likely incorrect and will not work.

Programming with AlfaOBD

  1. Connect to AlfaOBD: Plug your OBD2 adapter into the vehicle’s OBD2 port. With the ignition in the RUN position (engine off), connect to the vehicle using the AlfaOBD app.

  2. Access RFH Module: Select the “Radio Frequency HUB” module and connect.

  3. Check Programmed Fobs: In “System Status,” check “Number of Key Fobs Programmed.” The Cherokee allows a maximum of 8 programmed fobs.

  4. Retrieve PIN: Locate and record the unique PIN number for your vehicle, found under the RFH dropdown. This PIN is required for programming.

  5. Program the Fob: Select the appropriate programming option (“Program Ignition FOBIKs…”) based on your ignition type (key-in-ignition or keyless). Enter the PIN and select “START.”

  6. Verify Programming: After successful programming, “Successful” will appear. Recheck the “Number of Key Fobs Programmed” in the system status to confirm the increase.

Physical Key (Optional)

The key fob includes a physical key for manual door entry in case of battery failure. This key can be cut at most locksmiths or hardware stores.
