08 Suzuki XL7 Problems: Timing Chain and 4WD Issues

The 2008 Suzuki XL7 has been known to have a few common problems, notably with the timing chain tensioner and the 4-wheel drive system.

If you hear a noise coming from the front, lower area of the engine, it could be the timing chain tensioner. Vehicles purchased after August 2002 with under 100,000 miles might be covered under warranty. However, if purchased before August 2002 and with more than 3 years/36,000 miles, repairs will likely be out-of-pocket.

Difficulty disengaging the 4-wheel drive system is another potential issue. Ensure your tires are properly inflated and you’re driving straight. The 4×4 system isn’t designed for use on surfaces with good traction, as it can bind. Improper use is a common cause of binding. However, even with proper use, mismatched tires or improper inflation can contribute to this problem. All tires must rotate at the same speed for proper 4WD disengagement.

Regarding the timing chain issue, some suggest that using incorrect oil or low-quality oil filters can accelerate wear or cause problems. Recommendations often include using the manufacturer’s recommended oil viscosity and a high-quality oil filter, such as the OEM Suzuki filter. Alternatives like Purolator Pure One and Wix filters are also considered acceptable by some. Avoiding generic or low-quality filters is generally advised.
